Finding a hosting provider

In this guide the assumption is that you will use a Virtual Private Server, a linux VPS*.

So, find a VPS provider who can offer you a linux VPS. Just like domain registrars there are plenty of VPS prividers. There are a few requirements for using Yunohost.

  • First your VPS provider must offer a Debian 12 package.
  • You need full root-access. That may be restrictive for some budget providers who don't allow virtualisation using Docker
  • The server has some mimimum requirements: 512MB RAM and 16GB capacity. My suggestion: 4 GB Ram and 40 GB capacity. Some applications require lots of memory.
  • You can of course start with a small package and upgrade. Downgrading is not possible.

VPS providers

More selection criteria for chosing hosting providers: vps provider (mine: EU based provider owner) server location (mine: EU based) price (your pick, but range between €2 - €20 per month, discount for yearly invoicing) virtualisation platform (KVM, Xen)

VPS on a budget? Visit https://lowendbox.com/ for many options and price levels.

I have good results via time4vps.com, hostslick, netcup (if you can read German), but there are many good providers.
